"The state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that
people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it."
'Flow' - Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
High performance flow experience can happen in any activity from olympic gymnastics to
child rearing, and it turns out, thanks to a wide ranging study, that every flow activity has this in common: "it provided a
sense of discovery, a creative feeling of transporting the person into a new reality." Time has fallen away for me while making pieces of art,
while skiing, and most recently while white water kayaking.
In making this piece, I wanted to share that feeling, that deep and effortless involvement that mutes everyday
worries and frustrations, and silences self-consciousness. There is a fluid lightness and confidence
to it where each move is clear and flows seamlessly to the next. Time falls away, hours pass in what feels like seconds,
and we emerge feeling stronger, more put together because of the skills we just engaged. I like to call it The Quiet Symphony.
"Flow is the very thing that makes us come alive. It is the mystery. It is the point."
