I built half this piece before I realised what I was making. It was growing steadily on my workbench when I caught sight of First Steps, and what is now called Second Steps: Rest, in the window. I always knew First Steps was the first of three pieces. I just never consciously thought about the form of following two.

Second Steps: Rest is the result of a fun technique I had wanted to try for ages. And Third Steps was influenced by salt rock formations and intricate animated Gothic castles. Underlying each of them is the shape of the Asian rice terraces.

I think this nicely illustrates the nature of creativity, specifically that urge, instinct or call to do something you know is the best thing to do but you don't know why, or where it is going to take you. Those are the ideas, the little adventures, lifting off from work carried out by the unconscious while we rest.
