The empty circle is a symbol in Japanese calligraphy called Ensō.

The term refers to a handdrawn circle usually painted with black ink on white paper. Ensō is a concept associated with Zen, symbolizing that moment when the mind is free from thoughts and emotions, and completely present to let the body/spirit create. The Ensō, then, is an expression of the mind of the artist who brushes it.

Now, admittedly this piece is less free flowing in its structure than its painted influence. Making it was more of a steady and meditative experience. Also influenced by Japanese bamboo art, I used reed and wire in place of bamboo to add colour.
